Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP)

On completion of the online radio course, you will have the opportunity to complete an exam and get your radio operator certificate of proficiency.

A radio Licence will allow you to apply for an MMSI number for your vessel, which is required to transmit AIS information and enable the digital selective calling function on a radio.

Completing a radio exam

To attain your radio licence (certificate of proficiency), you must complete an exam. We have been approved by the Office of Maritime Communications to offer you a  remote assessment. The remote assessment is conducted via a video call and has two components to the radio exam:

  1. Theory assessment - 50 multiple choice questions. This is a closed book assessment and the required pass mark is 70% (35 questions correct).
  2. Practical assessment - a short observation where you will be asked to demonstrate your ability to use a radio, and how to make routine and distress calls.

Before sitting your exam, you will be required to pay a licence fee ($89) directly to the Office of Maritime Communications who mark the exam papers and distribute licences. This licence fee is not included in the online course enrolment. Your certificate of proficiency does not expire.

You can apply to complete a remote assessment when you have enrolled in the online course. A remote assessment is $100. The assessment is scheduled using an online calendar. The $100 remote assessment fee is paid when you schedule your assessment.  Currently the Office of Maritime Communications are taking 15 working days to issue a licence after your assessment has been completed.

Remote Licence Assessment - $100

Payable when scheduling an exam. This remote 'virtual' assessment is scheduled using an online calendar inside the course. If you have access to your own radio, you are welcome to sit the assessment from your boat or use your equipment. You do not need to bring a radio to the assessment.

The primary purpose of the assessment is to ensure you have understood everything you learnt and understand how it will be applicable for the context of the boating you are doing and plan to do. The assessment is conducted on a 1:1 basis to keep everything relevant and make time available at the end to cover any questions you have that are specific to your boating and equipment, such as the next steps for MMSI applications.

I did the LROCP course with Neil and found it to be very thorough and comprehensive. In the practical exam we talked through some enlightening examples which were very helpful for my future approach to communication in emergency situations. I have sailed all my life, full time for the past five years in a circumnavigation, am also Yachtmaster (Ocean), and I found this to be a world class education course.
George Stent
One of the best online courses I have ever attended. Neils tuition and guidance is first class, and the structure of the online theory is easy to follow and methodical yet simplistic in detail. I rate this very highly, and finished the course with a deeper understanding of communications at sea.
