We will teach you to use a VHF Radio to call for help in a distress situation and communicate with other vessels at sea. You will learn about marine communication and safety equipment you can carry on a modern sailing boat. There is also the option to book an SROCP assessment to get your radio licence if you need an MMSI number.
The Online Skipper Course will refine your practical skills and deepen your understanding of sailing boats. The modular approach to online learning features lessons with interactive presentations, tutorial videos and review questions. This course will develop your passage planning and preparation for sailing adventures. We teach you how to understand and maintain a sailing boat. International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
The skipper of a boat with a marine VHF radio onboard must hold a marine radio qualification, known as the Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP).
Once you have successfully finished the Complete Skipper Course and the SROCP assessment, you will hold the following qualifications:
- RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate
- Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP
- Online Skipper Course Certificate
These are the key next steps for your sailing skipper licence:
International Certificate of Competence (ICC) – In most of Europe, you will need both an ICC and a marine VHF licence, the SROCP.
To apply for an ICC, you can either do the RYA Day Skipper Practical course (5 days or 3 weekends) or take the ICC direct assessment (4 hours, only for experienced skippers).
To do either the course or assessment for an ICC, you need the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate first.
If you are skippering in Croatia, the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate and SROCP together meet the local requirements, so you do not also need to complete the ICC.
You can also complete the Complete Skipper Course now, use it for skippering or chartering, and then add the ICC later if required. The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate and SROCP do not expire.
To do either the course or assessment for an ICC, you need the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate first.
