This is an opportunity to bring to bring together your existing skills and identify and fill any gaps you might have in structured and enjoyable way.

There is an enormous satisfaction that comes from sitting and passing a Yachtmaster exam and having your seamanship skills and skippering ability examined and awarded this prestigious and internationally recognised qualification.

Usually you are examined with one or two other candidates. We encourage you to have crew on board who you would like to train with for the exam.

During your examination you are tested on a range of elements of the Yachtmaster syllabus including navigation, boat handling, man overboard, safety, meteorology, adverse weather management, your skippering ability and your eligibility to sit practical exams.

The Complete Skipper Course is your first step in becoming an Yachtmaster. Learn more here.

Phil Bennet had already skippered his own yacht in Category 1 races for decades before coming to Above and Beyond Boating...

"I was motivated to complete the course after we had some trouble working out the best course to steer as we approached Lord Howe Island in the 2013 race. The course being presented to us by our computer based navigation software did not give us the optimum result, due mainly to me not fully understanding the variables required as input, this cost us 2nd place in ORCi.

The course has helped me fill in a number of gaps in my knowledge in particular it provided a comprehensive understanding of tidal/current set and drift and its effect on estimating a position and the course to steer which is what I wanted to achieve.

Neil is an excellent teacher as he makes you do the practical work after pointing you in the direction to find information. This interactive approach forces you to make the effort to work out the answer yourself and doing so you gain an in depth understanding of the “why” rather than repetition of what you have been told.

I have also improved my ability to read and understand charts and the speed to update and use the chart as backup to our GPS based chart system.

So if you want to get a working knowledge of navigation, the rules of the road and how weather might interact with your planned voyage this course will provide that for you."

Phil Bennett - King Billy
